Why document classic car outings?

An enthusiast vehicle lives off its history. When were you at which meet? How many kilometres has it added up to this season? Where was that lovely drive through the vineyards you still remember so fondly? If you record your drives, you have an answer to all of this at any time - instead of a vague feeling that the car was barely used this year.

On top of that comes the practical benefit. With historic-plate vehicles in particular you deliberately cover few kilometres, and a clean overview of the routes driven is, for many, part of caring for the vehicle - alongside maintenance and restoration. An outings diary is something different from a tax logbook: it's not about the tax office, but about capturing the history of your vehicle and your finest tours.

What belongs in a logbook for your classic?

You don't have to record every little thing. These details have proven a good basis:

• Date and destination - the minimum. When, where to, which meet.
• Route and duration - makes outings comparable and keeps an eye on the season's kilometres.
• Vehicle - if you have more than one classic, you can review things per vehicle this way.
• Weather and conditions - with a classic, often the very reason you set off in the first place.
• Company - alone, with the club, with the family in the back.
• Photos - the car against the backdrop, the group shot at the meet, the detail on the engine.
• A short note - a sentence or two about the outing. Over the years, that's often the most valuable part.

Paper logbook, spreadsheet or app?

The classic paper logbook. For many it simply belongs to the car and is a lovely piece of its history. But: it isn't searchable, photos don't fit in it, and sooner or later the book is full or mislaid.

An Excel spreadsheet. Computable and searchable, but tedious to maintain - especially on the smartphone while out and about. Pictures can hardly be embedded usefully, and after a few seasons the table gets confusing.

An app. Combines both: quick entry on the go, photos right with the outing, searchable and reviewable.
